FIFA Foundation Digital Education Programme in Belize

Belize was selected for the regional initiative Code Caribbean: Promoting STEAM for Innovation in the Caribbean, which will train educators in computational sciences and socio-emotional skills to foster innovation. The project includes a pilot program to align education with job opportunities, strengthen links between the Ministry of Education and the private sector, and develop a national plan with the support of Code.org. It aims to prepare young people aged 8 to 13 in STEAM, improving their employability and continuous education.

The project aims to strengthen accountability and citizen participation in Costa Rica by implementing Open Data policies in 15 municipalities outside the Greater Metropolitan Area. It promotes multisectoral collaboration and trains public officials in international standards, transitioning from an Open Government model to an Open State. Focusing on transparency, social innovation, and service improvement, it fosters deliberative spaces among local governments, civil society, and the private sector.

Creating a Career Path in Cybersecurity

This project trained vulnerable youth and adults in digital security and workforce readiness skills. Facing educational barriers, many at-risk youth were given new opportunities in cybersecurity through technology and the internet. In 2018, the General Secretariat of the BogotĆ” Mayorās Office and The Trust for the Americas / OAS signed the initiation act of an agreement aimed at joining efforts to strengthen community capacities, foster collective action, and promote initiatives focused on memory, peace, and reconciliation in six districts of the city: Sumapaz, Usme, Bosa, Suba, Rafael Uribe, and San Cristóbal.

In 2016, Citi Foundation and Trust for the Americas launched the Urban Lab for Youth Innovation in Jamaica. This regional initiative fosters innovation and empowers young people aged 16 to 29 with training in entrepreneurship, mentoring, and access to technology to create low-cost, high-impact solutions. This project fosters collaboration between public institutions and civil society to promote co-creation through social innovation. Implemented by The Trust for the Americas, the Department for Effective Public Management of the OAS, and the U.S. Embassy in Belmopan, it consolidates Open Government efforts in Belize. In 2020, the first National Open Government Action Plan was launched, addressing the challenges of COVID-19 and strengthening public institutions through multisectoral processes.

Improving Municipal Government Services through Innovation and Local Networks

The Trust for the Americas, in partnership with local governments in Costa Rica and InnovaAp from the University of Costa Rica, promotes multisectoral collaboration and the creation of municipal networks. The project will implement two blockchain pilots to improve transparency and efficiency in municipal services. Social actors, such as NGOs, businesses, and academia, will receive training, mentorship, and resources for entrepreneurship. Five municipalities (Grecia, CaƱas, Quepos, Turrialba, and Orotina) participated in this initiative.

Implementation of the Inter-American Open Data Program to Prevent and Fight Corruption (PIDA) in Panama

This project promoted collaboration and the development of technical capacities between governments and citizens to implement the Inter-American Open Data Against Corruption Program (PIDA) in Panama. The use of open data strengthens democracy by enabling policies for the prevention and sanctioning of corruption. Through a comprehensive plan, the regulation was mapped, intersectoral dialogue and citizen empowerment were promoted, and digital technologies were leveraged to improve transparency and access to public information.
