Small & Medium Enterprise Competitiveness
Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Competitiveness

In this era of intense globalization, companies both large and small must adjust the way they do business in order to compete in a more integrated market. It is the small and medium enterprises, the backbone of any strong economy, that stand to be most impacted by increased trade and market integration. Governments and civil society must work together to develop realistic plans that will build the capacity of small and medium enterprises to compete both domestically and abroad. In partnership with the OAS Office for Trade, Growth and Competitiveness, our programs bring government and civil society together to set out realistic and attainable goals for policy changes that will help small business prepare and thrive in this new economic model.

Colombia
Free Trade Capacity Building and Civil Society

This project provided training to different segments of civil society on issues related to free trade, competitiveness and the establishment and preparation of an internal agenda for Colombia small and medium enterprise to adapt and compete in the coming era of free trade. Via a series of workshops and seminars in 27 cities in Colombia, international specialists from the WTO, World Bank and the OAS provided expertise on these issues and worked with local communities to develop workable competitive strategies.

Guatemala
Free Trade Community Dialogue

This 2004 public awareness project worked through community meetings, radio and the newspaper to educate small and medium enterprises, including indigenous farming communities in the west to inform them about ongoing CAFTA negotiations and their potential impact, both negative and positive, on differing commercial sectors.

The Caribbean
ICT Training for Small Tourism Enterprises

Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Belize, Dominica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Jamaica, and The Bahamas

Using Net Corps Americas (NCA) volunteers, the project provides critically needed support to the Caribbean small hotel sector through relevant ICT Training; training and assistance in Hotel Management and Operations, Environmental, and marketing.
