As part of its mission, the Trust promotes the active involvement of the private sector in development. Corporations are increasingly seeing the benefits of social investment in the countries and regions where they operate. This type of sustainable social investment strengthens the fabric of a community and promotes a strong economy and increased opportunity.
The Corporate Citizen of the Americas Award has been given by the Trust to an outstanding company for the past several years and is awarded each spring. The Award encourages corporations to play an increasing role in developing solutions to overcome poverty throughout the Americas through formally recognizing a company that has initiated an innovative program which benefits the community in which it operates. Past winners include Pfizer for a program to increase income for poor families in Brazil; Chrysler for a program promoting sustainable development in the Brazilian rainforest; Conoco Philips for a public, private and nonprofit partnership benefiting small-scale fishermen in the Gulf of Paria, Venezuela; and Pantaleon for a program to benefit workers' families in Guatemala.
Applications for the 2010 Corporate Citizen of the Americas Award will open on August 15th, 2010. The deadline for receiving applications is October 15th , 2010.
